About The Counterhegemon

The Counterhegemon is an independent news and analysis platform founded by award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker, scholar, and writer Gillian Schutte.

It emerges at a moment when the global media landscape is undergoing a profound contraction. Across much of the contemporary press, the range of acceptable political analysis has narrowed under the pressures of corporate ownership, donor influence and ideological gatekeeping. Narratives that interrogate imperial power, Western geopolitical strategy and global economic hierarchy are increasingly marginalised or reframed through liberal orthodoxies that stabilise existing power structures.

The Counterhegemon was established to reopen that intellectual and political space.

The publication focuses on politics, geopolitics, political economy, war coverage, international law, media power and resistance movements, while engaging deeply with African epistemologies, decolonial perspectives and critical race theory as frameworks for understanding history and power.

A central editorial commitment is the deconstruction of Western media narratives and propaganda systems that shape global perceptions of war, diplomacy, development and international conflict. Through investigative analysis and historical grounding, The Counterhegemon examines how narrative power operates and how information is mobilised in support of geopolitical interests.

Particular attention is given to the shifting global order as BRICS+ nations and the wider Global South assert increasing influence in international affairs. Developments involving Russia, China, Iran and other emerging powers are analysed within the broader context of a transition toward a multipolar world.

At the same time the publication foregrounds African struggles for sovereignty, land, resources, intellectual autonomy and economic justice. Africa is approached not as a passive theatre of global competition but as an active historical agent shaping the future of the international system.

The Counterhegemon publishes long-form essays, investigative commentary, cultural criticism and shorter analytical interventions. It welcomes contributions from writers, scholars, activists and journalists whose work engages critically with empire, race, sovereignty and global transformation.

The platform operates independently and maintains full editorial autonomy over its publishing agenda.

Submissions may include long-form essays, analytical commentary, investigative reporting or cultural criticism.

Work submitted should be original and unpublished, unless otherwise agreed.

Authors retain moral authorship of their work while granting The Counterhegemon first publication rights. Selected articles may also be licensed for international syndication and translation.
